So, you’re moving into your first place, “EVER“?! Congratulations! I am sure it took time, patience, compromise and effort to get to this Milestone in your life. Don’t get caught-up on making everything perfect. Believe me when I say….Perfection takes time and besides, you’ll be changing your mind a zillion times along the way anyway! So don’t stress yourself out. All you need to get started are a few basics, and you will build as you grow from this checklist:
1) Dishes: You just need something to eat on, drink from, cook and eat with
A plate setting for Four (4) is a good start Drinking cups and glasses. A few forks, spoons, butter and steak knives Frying pan, boiling pan, and sauce pan
2) Furniture:
Bed - as comfy as you can afford with a blanket, sheet set and a couple of pillows Couch - if you can add some side tables and chairs - great, if not.. This too will come Kitchen table - even if it's a fold up card table, you can still make it pretty
3) Laundry/cleaning products/storage:
Laundry/household cleaning products, dishwashing liquid Ironing board, laundry basket(s), trash cans for the kitchen and bathroom(s) Washcloths/towels/dish cloths and kitchen towels
DO NOT….I repeat….DO NOT…try to mirror how things were done in your Mother’s house, or how your Friends are running their households. You decorate, arrange, and manage your household the way that YOU SEE FIT. Of course, you will not know it all, and a lot of things you will figure out. Rule of thumb – don’t allow Negativity to enter your Home. Home should be your Sanctuary and Place of comfort. If anyone else is so concerned about how and what you are doing in your Home, perhaps they can offer to help with paying the bills!!
I chuckle when I think of my first place. Living in a furnished apartment with the ugliest Plaid used furniture (as I look back) ever! But I was happy, and my Home was filled with Love. That’s all that is important. Build your Home based on Love, Happiness, Security and Peace. The decorating part and all the other material “stuff” will pile up and come later. You will realize as you get older though…Simplicity is Best and that LESS IS MORE. Spending time with people you Love and making Memories, is most important when it’s all said and done….NOT “STUFF”.
